27 December, 2011 - One single look at Salma Hayek and perhaps the last thing on your mind would be that she too has her bad days. Yet the gorgeous actress is no stranger to insecurities, as she admits in a recent interview cited by the Daily Mail.

Now promoting “Puss in Boots,” on which she lends her voice, Salma also talks in a new interview about how there was a time when she was quite a tomboy, much to the amusement of her mates.When she was younger and, presumably, still with some growing up to do, Salma was the opposite of how she is now: whereas today she is curvy and feminine, back then she was slender and a tomboy.

At one point, she'd become so frustrated that all the other girls had started to grow breasts and she hadn't, that she actually prayed to Jesus for them.

“I was the youngest in class and all these girls were starting to get them [breasts] and I wasn’t getting anything – I was really scared. I was getting teased a lot because everyone was older and I was the skinny tomboy,” the actress says.

“I went to a church that had a saint that was supposed to do a lot of miracles. I put my hands in the holy water and went: 'Please Jesus give me some [breasts]',” she adds.

Today, Salma is known both for her drop-dead gorgeous looks and for her enviable curves. It seems her prayer helped her.

In another recent interview, the stunner said she was very much against plastic surgery, having resisted so far the temptation other Hollywood stars fall victim to of getting Botox or plastic surgery.

On one occasion she said she never had anything done to her face, saying today's trend made all women look the same: wrinkle-free but not particularly more beautiful for it.

In another, Salma explained that the reason she didn't get Botox until now was that she was too “terrified” of it, as we also informed you at the time.

Salma Hayek has revealed how cartoons such as Bambi "affected her badly" when she was little.

While she now counts herself "an animation expert", thanks to her four-year-old daughter Valentina, the Mexican actress' own early experiences with fairytales left her quite traumatised.

"More than inspire me, they sent me to the shrink. I had a severe depression at the age of six because Bambi's mother dies. It affected me badly, it confronted me with death, so I'm still working on that one," she admitted.The 45-year-old - who reunites with long-time friend Antonio Banderas for animated adventure Puss In Boots - then found herself disillusioned after watching Disney films featuring princesses like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella.

"Those messed me up because they made you feel a prince was going to come and rescue you and that if you're cute, you don't have to do much in life, which is not true. I had to deal with that one for a long time," she added.

Luckily for Salma, things changed when she saw the 1971 version of Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory, starring Gene Wilder as the sweet-toothed creator.

"That was a redemption because somehow, something clicked in my brain. It made me want to be an actress because I realised there was a place in the world called films where you could go and you have no limitations.

Earlier this month, the team placed McKnight on injured reserve with a torn ACL, so, suffice it to say, the man has some time on his hands. Although McKnight spent most of the year on the practice squad, he looked to have some potential in the preseason as a wide receiver.

We’re hoping the team holds onto him next year, if only, to see more candid shots of his lady friend.

Speaking of the diminutive Panettiere, she looks far too young to be drinking. Especially since, most of us remember her as the demonstrative daughter of Coach Bill Yoast from Remember the Titans. Hopefully, the Jets concession staff did their due diligence and carded her.

But it appears that sometimes Hayden Panettiere just wants to dress in comfy clothing and earlier today she was looking far from red carpet ready.

The actress, 22, was seen leaving a supermarket with friends and appeared to have pulled on her outfit just a few moments earlier.

Hayden donned a pair of scruffy ripped shorts a green T-shirt and a pair of Ugg boots for the shopping trip.

The Heroes star appeared to have embraced the relaxed look and left the house without a scrap of makeup and had her hair scraped back into a scruffy ponytail.

And the actress also appeared to have forgotten her bra too in the quick dash to pick up some supplies.

Hayden left the store clutching a bag filled with a selection of groceries including a number of packets of chicken noodle soup.

Her scruffy appearance was a world away from her preened appearance on Wednesday night as she attended the Fireflies In The Garden screening at the Pacific Theater.

Hayden donned an asymmetrical olive green dress and wore her hair in tight curls around her face as she took to the red carpet with her co-stars including Julia Roberts.

The 'Heroes' actress was onstage ready to present the award for Best Song - which was won by Lady Gaga for 'Born This Way' - when a completely nude man appeared in front of her, who was later revealed to be Belfast-born actor David Monahan, and he insisted the stunt was not pre-planned.

He told MailOnline: "Two friends of mine work for the security company, they got me in but they didn't know I was going to storm the stage.

"I undressed in a backstage store room and considering Lady Gaga is walking about with a flying saucer on her head, not many people notice a guy with a black blanket wrapped around him."

Hayden Panettiere has voiced her support for President Obama’s stance on Iceland’s whaling.

In 2006, Iceland resumed its whaling operations despite a moratorium on commercial whaling established by the International Whaling Commission in 1986. While many have criticized Obama for backing down on his campaign promises to protect whales and supporting efforts to lift the ban on commercial whaling, the president is now condemning Iceland’s disregard for the moratorium. According to the Associated Press, Obama’s administration “will cite Iceland under a domestic law that allows the president to act against foreign nationals or countries who flout international animal conservation rules.” The United States has now threatened political and trade sanctions against Iceland.

Hayden Panettiere, a vegetarian and spokesperson for The Whaleman Foundation‘s Save The Whales Again campaign, has said “We commend President Obama and his administration for taking this strong action against Iceland and its barbaric whaling industry…and we urge the President to take similar action against Japan and Norway as well!” Japan and Norway continue to whale, with Japan claiming that their hunt is for research purposes, however the Obama administration has said they are especially concerned with Iceland’s hunt of endangered fin whales and exporting of whale meat to pro-whaling countries.

Hayden has also gone to Japan in defense of dolphins. She was featured in the documentary The Cove, which brought light to the annual dolphin slaughter in Taiji. In 2007, she joined activists from Surfers for Cetaceans in a peaceful protest in the waters of the cove, before they were chased out by the dolphin hunters in boats. On her decision to stand up for whales and dolphins, the actress has said “because I am in the public eye I feel the need to be a voice of worthy and important causes whose efforts impact the lives of every person on Earth. These animals are being brutally and unnecessarily slaughtered – and who are we to say to they have less of a right to exist than we do.”

Actress and vegetarian Hayden Panettiere has weighed in on the news that the U.S. government has officially condemned Iceland’s disregard for the global moratorium on whaling.

The former Heroes star applauded President Obama for taking a stand against the unnecessary and cruel practice that has been taking place since 2006 when Iceland resumed its annual whale hunt.

"We commend President Obama and his administration for taking this strong action against Iceland and its barbaric whaling industry…" said Hayden Panettiere, international spokesperson for the Save the Whales Again! Campaign and The Whaleman Foundation, "And we urge the President to take similar action against Japan and Norway as well!"
According to The Whaleman Foundation, the Obama administration “is citing Iceland under a domestic law called the Pelly Amendment that allows the president to act against foreign countries who defy international conservation laws and treaties.”

And considering the current political climate in the United States, it’s refreshing to see that President Obama followed through on a campaign promise he made during his 2008 run.

"When Hayden and I met with President Obama on the campaign trail back in January 2008, he said if he were elected president, he would take action against the whaling nations," said Jeff Pantukhoff, founder of The Whaleman Foundation and Save the Whales Again! It's been over a year and a half since actress Hayden Panettiere was last on our TV screens as a cheerleader with superpowers Claire on the weekly series "Heroes," but she's still been busy trying to save the world. Hayden, 22, continues to crusade on behalf of dolphins and whales, Washington, D.C. statehood, and -- oh yes -- acting! She's headed back to the silver screen on October 14 with a limited release of her emotional new film, "Fireflies in the Garden," with Julia Roberts and Ryan Reynolds. It shows a family struggling through grief after an accident, with plenty of flashbacks featuring Hayden.

The "Scream 4" star chatted with omg! about her new film, her motivation for activism, and her feelings about the Amanda Knox verdict after playing the controversial young American in a made-for-TV movie earlier this year.

What made you want to do the film "Fireflies in the Garden"?

It obviously has an amazing cast, and the privilege to work with actors like that is just something that I couldn't pass up. It was also the first film that I had done since I'd been on "Heroes." It was in between the first season and the second season. And I really loved coupling a big show like "Heroes" with ... a very character-driven film.

You mentioned the stellar cast, which also includes Willem Dafoe, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Ioan Gruffudd. Did you get any advice from anybody on the set?

Advice between actors doesn't happen quite as often as you would think. Generally, the best advice and the biggest lessons you take away are silent ones, of just observing and having to rise to the level of these actors around you, and just surrounding yourself with people who make you want to be better.

You've been very vocal about fighting for the protection of whales and dolphins. How did you get interested in the cause?

Well, I was on a film when I was 15. It was an independent film called "Shanghai Kiss," and the founder of the Whaleman Foundation, Jeff Pantukhoff, pulled me aside on the last day and said, "I know you're a fan of animals. Can I show you what I do?" He showed me footage of the dolphins and whales, and what was going on, and I said, "Absolutely, let me know what I can do."

Just last month, you were honored for your activism on behalf of Washington, D.C., statehood when the mayor declared it Hayden Panettiere Day. How did you get involved with that issue?

When I turned 18, [it] was the first time that I really started concentrating on politics. And I started doing so because I realized that in order to really create and generate change, it has to come from changing laws ... so I started campaigning for Norman Lear's foundation, which was Declare Yourself.

I happened to be at American University in Washington, D.C., while President Obama was campaigning there. While I was there, I met Senator [Paul] Strauss, who's the shadow senator of D.C. ... and he kind of tried to push me aside, and [said] "I don't have a vote anyway." I inquired about that, and I was confused and curious.

What motivates you to be an activist?

I had great examples ... I think it's important, you know? A seed was planted in my head [when I was] very young. I started this when I was 15, and it was just because I was such a lover of animals, and I saw an animal in need. And then over time, and [through] spending time with these animals, and realizing how important our oceans are to us as humans, to our Earth.

You played Amanda Knox in a TV movie this year. What do you think about her murder conviction being overturned?

It's hard not to be happy to see a young girl have a second chance at life. And I'm not in any position to say whether she's guilty or innocent. It's a very complicated case. There were a lot of things that were done improperly. It's kind of mind-blowing. But I can say that she's been given a second chance at life, and I hope she makes the best out of it.

You've grown up in the public spotlight. Does that make it difficult to date now?

Of course, of course. In my case, you know, every time you're standing next to someone, you're automatically dating them. And the [tabloids] seem to think that they know exactly when a relationship started and ended, and exactly how it happened. Then you get criticized for it.

I used to deny a lot of it ... and be very protective of the relationship. And then I went through one that was very public, and I was very open about. You kind of learn what to do and what not to do, that it's only a stress on you if you really try to go out of your way to hide it. But it is your right to have certain things be private and personal.

(For the record, Hayden confirms she's currently dating New York Jets wide receiver Scotty McKnight, 23.)

What are you working on next?

I was supposed to go do a film recently, but that's been pushed to next year. It's called "Over the Wall" ... with Melissa Leo and Freddie Rodriguez. It's a pretty dark indie film, so hopefully we'll get that done next year. There are certain things that I'm also working on producing, one of them having to do with the whales and dolphins, and trying to figure out, as I say, how to get people to swallow the pill wrapped in bacon. The pill being the information, and the bacon making that information taste good.

If Julia Roberts looked a little too somber at the premiere of Fireflies In The Garden, her co-star Hayden Panettiere more than made up for it. She chose a toga-styled, one-shouldered mini dress by Jenny Packham for the event. The silver fabric picked up plenty of light, but Hayden’s mirrored Christian Louboutins really stood out.

I’m not liking this look on her at all. I mean, she’s young, she has a cute body, if anyone can wear tiny sparkly dresses, why not Hayden? But she looks really uncomfortable here, like she’s obsessively thinking, “What piece of my dress is going to cause a wardrobe malfunction first?” Because you know something is going to happen. Maybe part of the problem is that I don’t really care for this dress – it even looked strange on the runway model. But I do think that there are plenty of other fun, young dresses she could have chosen and yet she went with this one. Why?

OK, so it’s not that serious. But what are celebrities for if not to talk about what they wear? And her dress aside, I think Hayden looks really pretty.

Panettiere honored for DC statehood advocacy

Actress Hayden Panettiere was born and raised in upstate New York, lives in Los Angeles and has no roots in the nation's capital. But she's passionate about securing full representation in Congress for District of Columbia residents.

That's what led Panettiere to the John A. Wilson Building, the district's city hall, where Mayor Vincent Gray proclaimed Friday as "Hayden Panettiere Day."

"It doesn't get much cooler than that. It's a huge honor," Panettiere said. "We'll continue just chipping away at the problem and trying to fix it."

Panettiere, 22, who played a cheerleader with superpowers on the NBC drama "Heroes," has been speaking out since 2008 for D.C. statehood. Before then, she said she was unaware that the district had no voting representatives in Congress.

"It seems like such (an) unfathomable fact that, you know, it's taxation without representation in D.C., and that there's no democracy in our democracy, at the heart of it," said Panettiere, who looked the part of a lobbyist in a conservative black suit with her blond hair tied back.

After her private meeting with the mayor, Panettiere spoke in the cramped basement office of her friend Paul Strauss, one of the district's two shadow senators. Strauss' elected position comes with no salary and a responsibility to lobby for the district.

Panettiere, a spokeswoman for the conservation campaign Save the Whales Again!, met Strauss at a Barack Obama campaign appearance. She asked him to vote for the group's anti-whaling bill only to learn that he had no vote.

"At that point, a lot of folks who are advocating sort of stop and will move on to the next politician in the room," Strauss said. "She was different."

Panettiere, whose movie credits include "Remember the Titans" and "Scream 4," was scheduled to appear at a fundraiser later Friday to benefit the D.C. Statehood Fund.

The mayor was arrested in April along with other city leaders while protesting what they called unjust meddling by Congress in local affairs. Panettiere, who brushed with authorities while trying to stop a dolphin hunt in Japan, said Gray's willingness to go to jail shows the seriousness of the issue.

"I was very impressed," she said. "I tried my hardest to get arrested in Japan, to no avail."

Heroes actress Hayden Panettiere may have absolutely no roots in Washington, D.C., but that is not stopping her from supporting a push to give the nation’s capitol statehood.

D.C. mayor Mayor Vincent C. Gray proclaimed Sept. 16 “Hayden Panettiere Day” to honor her decision to join the push and raising “awareness among a new generation of our unique and unjust plight,” according to The Washington Post.

D.C. residents still pay taxes, even though they have no representative in the Senate and their representative in the House can not vote on legislation. Panettiere brought this up as the crux of her decision to fight, saying that, “that there's no democracy in our democracy, at the heart of it,” according to The Associated Press.

Penettiere has also been an activist for saving whales. Last week, she also appeared at the White House in an attempt to thank President Obama’s attempt to put political pressure on countries to ban whaling, according to The Washington Post.

Panettiere's Knox movie to be changed

Hayden Panettiere's movie about Amanda Knox is to be altered after the American student's murder conviction was overturned on Monday.

The Heroes star plays the title role in the TV movie Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy, which is based around the brutal killing of Knox's roommate, Meredith Kercher, in the Italian city of Perugia in 2007, and the subsequent trial.

Knox, 24, was found guilty of the killing and sentenced to 26 years in prison in 2009, but she took the case to appeal and her conviction was quashed on Monday.

Bosses at the Lifetime TV network have now confirmed Panettiere's film will be changed to incorporate the result of the appeal ahead of a planned US broadcast on Tuesday, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The publication reports Panettiere declined to comment on the verdict.

The actress, 45, has just launched her own range of beauty products — some inspired by mornings with her four-year-old daughter Valentina.

“One breakfast time I had made pancakes and orange juice for my daughter and I had an idea,” explains Salma.

“I took brown sugar, honey and the orange juice, mixed it up and created this great face scrub and mask. I put it on for 20 minutes and I was back feeling great. It’s things like this that really inspire me.”

Salma recently insisted she’ll never have plastic surgery.

“I believe that every woman is entitled to fight to preserve her youth,” she said.

“It’s like the uniform of a generation. It’s not wrinkled-looking, but it’s not beautiful.

“As a woman, you should be more at ease with your sexuality when you are in your 40s.

“You are more self-assured about that part. And that’s the way it should be. If you are a girl who cannot walk in heels, it doesn’t matter how beautiful you are. If you look like a chicken that’s been spiked in the feet, it’s not going to be sexy.”

Salma Hayek's new skincare, haircare and makeup line, Nuance -- which debuts at CVS stores this month -- is extensive to say the least. And with over 100 different products, a little overwhelming. That was until we met with Hayek recently to walk through the line and discovered why she was so passionate about creating it in the first place.

Hayek (who has been the face of Avon and Revlon in the past) was very much involved in the creation of her products. The line, she says, has actually been in the works for twenty years: It was a dream of her Mexican grandmother, who was always making creams and tinctures with local healing herbs. "She started studying all these indigenous plants, and would get all her information from the witch doctors in Oaxaca," says Hayek.

The actress has applied this same philosophy to her line, sourcing ingredients native to her homeland -- specifically tepezcohuite (a plant that has been used on burn victims for centuries), which is seen throughout the line. "It's like this miracle," says Hayek. "It regenerates cells really fast." And in response to why she decided to partner with drugstore chain CVS: "I didn't want to do a high-end line because my most precious ingredients are not expensive," she says. "It's not gold. Or caviar. But I'm sure it's not better than tepezcohuite.

It doesn't have to be expensive to be good."

The line -- which Hayek admits wasn't always going to be this big -- includes everything from eyeshadow quads to moisturizing body scrubs to anti-aging eye creams. When Hayek was asked to choose a stand-out product from the line, the actress just couldn't wrap her head around the idea. "I didn't understand the concept of a hero product," says Hayek. "To me every single product had to be a hero, if not why make it?"

While Hayek admitted that she had previously bought $700 creams, she was always frustrated when they didn't actually work. This line, Hayek explained, is for every woman. "I don't think good quality products should be a luxury, it should be a right!" she says. "It's the way we reinvent and decorate and celebrate ourselves, it's a ritual we've been doing forever."

President Obama's decision this week to censure Iceland for its continued commercial whaling activity was welcomed by many animal activists, including "Heroes" actress Hayden Panettiere.

The 22-year-old has been involved in efforts to end whaling around the world for several years, most notably as a spokesperson for the Save the Whales Again! campaign. On Thursday, she lauded the president's decision and implored him to expand his disapproval to other whaling countries.

"I am here to personally thank and applaud President Obama for his bold actions taken against Iceland today for its illegal slaughter of minke whales and fin whales which is in direct violation of the commercial whaling moratorium," she said. "And we urge the president to take similar action against Japan and Norway as well!"

The Obama administration is citing Iceland under a domestic law called the Pelly Amendment that allows the president to act against foreign countries that defy international conservation laws and treaties. His recommendations of action were largely without bite, as no trade sanctions were imposed — but orders to the secretaries of state and commerce to ramp up pressure on the government in Reykjavik were nonetheless welcomed.

"We appreciate the president's direction that federal agencies 'keep the situation under review' and report back in six months or 'immediately upon the resumption of fin whaling by Icelandic nationals,' " wrote Taryn Kiekow of the Natural Resources Defense Council. "We believe this sends a message that the United States will immediately reconsider a stronger response should Iceland resume fin whaling."

"Although we believe the president should have imposed tougher sanctions now, his actions today confirm that the United States is prepared to intensify its response if the measures directed today prove inadequate," she added.

Panettiere and Jeff Pantukhoff, founder of The Whaleman Foundation and Save the Whales Again! Campaign, said they were happy to see Obama fulfill a campaign promise to take action against whaling countries; adding that they looked forward to more "bold moves from this administration."

"Protecting these magnificent animals, and the oceans they rely on, is exactly what governments should be doing because by protecting marine life and our oceans, ultimately we are protecting ourselves," added Hayden. Hayden Panettiere didn't need long to perfect her high-pitched scream for her upcoming role in the movie "Scre4m."

She says she had a lot of practice playing cheerleader Claire Bennet on the wildly popular television show "Heroes" for four years.

In this reboot of the iconic movie, originally from 1996, Panettiere plays Kirby Reed, just one of the many young actresses with a role in this movie.

While trailers and exclusive clips about the film have gone viral, any more information has been kept on lock-down by the studio in an attempt not to ruin any surprises about what happens in the movie.

All she could say about the likelihood of her character dying: "She's a girl and usually besides the other two girls, none of them usually survive, right," she says.Like all the other "Scream" movies, this one was directed by famed horror mastermind Wes Craven.

At first Panettiere wasn't sure what to expect from him, but she soon realized Craven was great to work with.

"[He] is amazing," she says. "You always expect a guy like that to be creepy, it's like if you met Stephen King … you would expect them to be creepy, there's got to be some reason why their love in life is to terrify people.

"But he's amazing and he's such a sweet man and there's nothing creepy about him … One of the things I love about him is when you're on set, you see how much he loves what he does, and that sets such a great vibe for the set and it makes people really want to be there. He's a mastermind and he's brilliant."

Part of Panettiere's preparation for her role as Kirby Reed in the newest edition of "Scream" was to watch all the old ones.

"It was part of my personal preparation," she says. "I understood where the past ‘Scream' movies had come from, because ‘Scream' redefined horror movies. It was so much about those rules of a horror movie and how they work nowadays."

Panettiere says she has sort of a love/hate relationship while watching scary movies.

"Yes, I'm a big horror movie fan, and I used to love scaring myself half to death when I was younger," she says. "As long as I had my parents' bed to run into, but when I started living with myself, I had to pretty much ban all horror movies from my house.

"I couldn't even watch a preview for a horror movie because my imagination would just get the best of me. The great thing [about this movie] is that it's not just that horror film, it's that real roller coaster, or big game of Clue."

So while Panettiere is somewhat of a fan of horror movies, filming one, and being back stage, changed her view a little bit.

"It was fun, but it's so high strung through so much of the film when you're doing a horror movie," she says. "It's the big scare, or screaming, or running away – there's a lot of emotions that go on with it. It's very difficult when you're on set and filming to be really genuinely scared because everything can be so technical.

So nearly 15 years after the first one made, what's different? Technology, for one, Panettiere says. "There's a lot of modern day that comes in to the film – much more technology and how that plays into horror movies now," she says. "Also, the filming of murders like the kind of thing you see in "Saw"; the rules have changed. The audience has evolved and has gotten harder and harder to scare and therefore the rules and what is cliché has to change and evolve and adapt as well."

Panettiere enjoyed making the movie and said in the interview with Zap2it that she really connected with her fellow cast mates.

"My best friends are now the people I met on this movie," the actress shared.

One of those friends is actually someone she grew up with and shares a manager with, Rory Culkin. The two used to have sleepovers together at her house in Rockland County, N.Y.

Starring together in a TV movie based the real case of a student convicted of killing her roommate, Hayden Panettiere and Marcia Gay Harden talk green.

Although she grew up in an eco-conscious home, where conserving was "always a natural thing to do," Hayden Panettiere says "there's always more ways to be greener and healthier, and there's things that I want to get involved with environmentally. There's always more that can be done." The former "Heroes" star plays the title role in the made-for-Lifetime movie "Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy," premiering Feb. 21 and based on the infamous case of an American student accused of killing her roommate. The documentary "Beyond the Headlines: Amanda Knox" will follow the movie.

"It's one of those really riveting stories where you just don't know. I can't say that I have an opinion, and that's why the story is so interesting," says Panettiere, who delved into courtroom transcripts and watched news video to prepare for the daunting task of playing a real person. "I think it was incredibly important to capture who this girl was. I watched hours of footage of her and of the trial and her composure and the way she held herself and the way she spoke, her tone of voice," notes the actress, who'd listen to Knox's voice on headphones "to get her intonations and the way she spoke and the shakiness in her voice. She really tried to be as stoic and as brave as she could against all odds, and I do commend her for it. I tried my very best with the materials that I had handy to do that myself." Panettiere will also be seen in "Scream 4," in theaters Apr. 15.

Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden, who plays Knox's distraught but supportive mother, felt a responsibility in playing a real person and did her homework, as well. "I was able to garner a lot of information from the vast sources of research that I did. An actor's job is the job of an anthropologist in many ways because you study behavior — quirks, tics. You try to see what this family was before and you make assumptions based on that." While the truth of what happened may never come out, "it wasn't a premeditated thing," Harden believes.

At home in New York, where she gets around by subway and Prius, "We're a very green family. We're vegetarian. We recycle. We gave up bottled water years ago. We compost for the garden. If I could go geothermal, I would." Harden has several indie films awaiting release, and hopes to continue her guest starring role as FBI agent Dana Lewis on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit."
